In classical Vedic astrology, your birth chart (D1 or Rasi) is only the first layer of the full
picture. Classical texts like the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describe a system of Varga
(divisional) charts — each generated by dividing every zodiac sign of the birth chart into a
specific number of equal parts. Every Varga chart magnifies one specific domain of life, like a
microscope turned on that theme, giving a level of precision impossible from the D1 alone.
The Sixteen Classical Divisional Charts (Shodasavarga)
- D1 — Rasi (main birth chart). The foundation — personality, body, overall life arc. Every other Varga is read alongside the D1, never in isolation.
- D2 — Hora (wealth). Divides each sign into two halves. Shows financial flow, savings, and the life-long wealth capacity of the native.
- D3 — Drekkana (siblings & courage). Each sign divided into three. Shows brothers and sisters, initiative, courage and short journeys.
- D4 — Chaturthamsa (fortune & fixed assets). Each sign divided into four. Reads for luck, home, real estate and emotional happiness.
- D7 — Saptamsa (children & progeny). Each sign divided into seven. Reveals number, nature, health and karmic relationship with children.
- D9 — Navamsa (marriage, dharma, inner strength). Each sign divided into nine. The most important Varga after D1 — shows spouse, marriage timing, and the real strength of every planet.
- D10 — Dasamsa (career & profession). Each sign divided into ten. Zooms into the actual type of profession, workplace environment, rises and falls in career.
- D12 — Dwadasamsa (parents & ancestry). Each sign divided into twelve. Reveals karma with father and mother, ancestral inheritance, family legacy.
- D16 — Shodasamsa (vehicles & comforts). Each sign divided into sixteen. Classical chart for conveyances, luxuries and general happiness from material comforts.
- D20 — Vimsamsa (spiritual progress). Each sign divided into twenty. Reads for sadhana, mantra, deity worship and spiritual evolution.
- D24 — Chaturvimsamsa (learning & education). Each sign divided into twenty-four. Also called Siddhamsa — academic success, knowledge, qualifications.
- D27 — Bhamsa / Nakshatramsa (strengths & weaknesses). Each sign divided into twenty-seven. Gauges overall planetary capacity, endurance and physical resilience.
- D30 — Trimsamsa (misfortunes & doshas). Each sign divided into five unequal parts ruled by Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus. The classical chart for accidents, illness and difficulties.
- D40 — Khavedamsa (maternal karma). Each sign divided into forty. Reveals auspicious and inauspicious effects inherited from the mother's lineage.
- D45 — Akshavedamsa (paternal karma). Each sign divided into forty-five. Reveals general life effects inherited from the father's lineage.
- D60 — Shashtiamsa (fine karma & past lives). Each sign divided into sixty. Used for the most delicate karmic readings; Parashara gave this chart the highest weight in judging overall destiny.
Why Multiple Charts Matter
A planet can look strong in D1 but weak in D9 — classically this means the promise exists but
will not fully fructify in married life. A career line that looks ordinary in D1 can become dramatic
in D10. The Navamsa often confirms (or reverses) marriage timings predicted from D1. Reading a chart
across its divisional layers is what separates a beginner-level reading from a true classical Jyotish
analysis. This free tool computes all eight charts from your exact birth time and place — use
them together for the most complete reading of your life.
